Background
I noticed that popular drinks like coffee, smoothies, matcha, and cocktails thrive both at shops and at home—yet boba, despite similar popularity and price, remains almost exclusively a "go out" activity. This observation sparked the question: what's preventing boba from transitioning to home, and what would it take to make the home boba experience worth it?

Research
The market shows positive growth, invested consumers, and huge social engagement, so why don’t we see more of it? To better understand boba culture and the drink itself, I interviewed a bobarista at a Kung Fu Tea and the owner of Ding Tea in downtown Grand Rapids.
Insights from Interviews
Fresh tapioca pearls take ~30 mins of cooking and only last 3-4 hours.
About 80% of orders include tapioca pearls.

The Opportunity
Coffee, cocktails, and ice cream thrive at shops and at home. Premium home equipment doesn't just serve existing demand, it creates it. Boba has the ideal prerequisites: frequent high-cost purchases, strong ritual elements, and passionate Gen Z consumers. What's missing is the product that inspires the behavior and makes it feel special.

Design Process
I began exploring how to redesign the cup sealer for the home context. Rather than sketching from scratch, I analyzed existing solutions to understand what works, what doesn’t, and what opportunities exist for reimagining this machine for home users.
Existing Models
Semi auto cup sealer. 300-500 cups/hr. $230
Manual cup sealer. 300-500 cups/hr. $90
A home version should mimic simpler manual machines.
Aluminum heating rings provide fast, uniform heat transfer.
Existing models are too large and utilitarian for modern kitchens.
Mechanism Selection
A home version with less cup volume should include a simple cam and follower mechanism to reduce complexity.
Users slide the extendable tray and then engage the lever to seal the cup.
Size Study and Aesthetic Inspirations
To fit under a standard kitchen cabinet, the total height needs to be less than about 18”. I wanted my machine to echo the design language of popular small kitchen appliance brands like Ninja, Breville, KitchenAid, and Cuisinart.
Sealing Film Path
The sealing film path affects the product’s footprint, aesthetic, and user interaction. I wanted my machine to hide one of the film rolls and use the other for users to rotate the film to fit the modern kitchen appliance aesthetic.
CAD Modeling
I started by modeling a simpler version of the machine to better understand the mechanism. From there I concepted the outer housing.
Refined Model
Prototyping
To validate the mechanism, I assembled 3D-printed components and off-the-shelf hardware into an MDF test rig. This prototype allowed me to calibrate the relationship between the cam, plunger, and springs, confirming that the system achieves consistent sealing pressure with comfortable lever torque.
