PopSeal is a compact countertop cup sealer that enables users to recreate the boba ritual at home with affordable, cafe quality drinks.
Designed for Gen Z enthusiasts, PopSeal enables the satisfying “stab moment” and Instagram worthy presentation that defines boba culture but has never been accessible to home kitchens.
Background
I noticed that popular drinks like coffee, smoothies, matcha, and cocktails thrive both at shops and at home—yet boba, despite similar popularity and price, remains almost exclusively a "go out" activity. This observation sparked the question: what's preventing boba from transitioning to home, and what would it take to make the home boba experience worth it?

Research
The market shows positive growth, invested consumers, and huge social engagement. On paper, the demand to make boba at home is there, so why don’t we see more of it? To better understand boba culture and the drink itself, I interviewed a bobarista at a Kung Fu Tea and the owner of Ding Tea in downtown Grand Rapids.
Insights from Interviews
Fresh tapioca pearls take ~30 mins of cooking and only last 3-4 hours, making it impractical for the home. Shops make 2-3 batches per day.
About 80% of orders include tapioca pearls, with milk tea, taro, and lemonade flavors being the most popular.
Shelf stable alternatives exist, such as crystal boba and popping boba. While they aren’t as popular in shops, they may lend themselves better for home users.
The seal cup serves both a functional and aesthetic purpose. Bobaristas will often shake the sealed cup right before serving.
A significant aspect of boba culture is about getting boba with friends and sharing it on social media.

The Opportunity
Coffee, cocktails, and ice cream thrive at shops and at home. Premium home equipment doesn't just serve existing demand, it creates it. Ninja Creami didn't target people already making ice cream at home; it inspired millions by making the process achievable and shareable. Boba has the ideal prerequisites: frequent high-cost purchases, strong ritual elements, and passionate Gen Z consumers. What's missing isn't demand, it's the product that inspires the behavior and makes it feel special.

Ideation
I began exploring how to redesign the cup sealer for the home context. Rather than sketching from scratch, I analyzed existing solutions to understand what works, what doesn’t, and what opportunities exist for reimagining this machine for home users.

Strong market signals exist alongside online virality and a growing DIY segment, but current solutions overlook a critical element: the sealed cup.
